Errors depend on the vehicle manufacturer, and the model... I know some newer Fords would store body computer errors and such, down to window motor codes. But who knows what would be stored on an e46.
With most cars if the battery is disconnected for 5-10 mins it will reset all codes (small battery that runs the ecu when there is no power goes dead). If the code is there when you reconnect its probably still bad...
