Great question.

The engine was replaced because the engine spun a rod bearing. BMW NA reviewed the situation and decided that a warranty replacement was in order; BMW of Fairfax completed the work.

Ultimately, this situation gave me the opportunity to break-in the new engine. Anyone who knows me will agree when I say that I am probably borderline OCD. With that said, I chose to follow the break-in instructions to the letter. The engine does not loose a drop of oil between maintenance periods. I attribute this directly to the break-in procedure I followed.

Because of the high performance nature of the S54 motor, my attention to the engine has continued beyond the break-in period. I never exceed 3K RPM until the engine oil temp has reached 165 degrees. The engine has not been reved over 5K RPMs until the full operating oil temp has been reached (~195-200 degrees).

I hope that helps.
