Rent a setup if it's your first time, no sense in wasting money. Just make sure the boots fit properly. Boots should feel snug but not suffocating. This was an adjustment for me because I'm used to having my street shoes be loose. Also get a proper pair of wool snowboarding socks. If you wear street socks your feet will get wet/cold and combine that with improperly fitting boots and you'll get blisters in no time.
