Yeah, It's more of a fun hobbie than a practical application. I actually prefer something with actual button control rather than touchscreen for use while driving. Touchscreen requires you to see where you're touching but physical buttons you don't. I'm looking into one of these...

It gives you iDrive type control but with the carputer. You can still use the iPad for display, but it's not required for input. There is also the option of controlling the carputer directly from the stereo or steering wheel controls which is nice because it doesn't require any aditional equipment. I have a converter box that inputs composite display and the T42 outputs composite, so it can be visible on the stock 16x9 headunit. The iPad has much nicer resolution however.
