you do not need to "protect" your rim with tape or anything (i don't see how the final product would look good if you taped the rim then sprayed it). Just clean thoroughly, remove everything from the surface if you need to clean with a greasy substance with water. Let the surface completely dry then spray it with the plastidip. If you don't want the plastidip, you can just peel it off and the surface underneath won't be ruined.
