To remove the front crank bolt I took some pieces of lumbar (random sizes) and wedged them between the block at the crankshaft in a couple spots. Then got a 3 ft + breaker bar and it came off. Took a couple tries to get the wood right, but I used spruce (soft white wood) so I couldn't crack anything on the block.

Edit - the BMW way to do it is to get a tool like this:

http://www.technictool.com/bmwflywheel-1.htm (lower left - 112-170) and replace the starter with it, this locks the flywheel and viola, you can put a crap ton of force on it without anything slipping.
