The barrel basically controls the rate of expansion of the shot as it travels down range. That, combined with the choke and ammo creates your pattern. For anything distance related you're going to want a longer barrel. Choke is a matter of personal preference to a certain point. On my 870 im running a 28" barrel with a full choke.

the more "full" a choke is the tighter your shot will be. The longer the barrel the longer your shot stays "tight". I'm sure Reedo is typing up a novel on this and will hopefully do the trick if my explanation doesn't.
