I used WD40 on my car to remove some silver tar splatter that roofers got allover my car when doing a roof in Chicago. I was worried that the chemicals would hurt the paint, but nothing was getting it off except for the WD40. I tested a small area and it was fine. I did not let it sit for too long, just long enough to penetrate through the tar and after I was done I gave the car a good wash with soap and then waxed it. The paint looks fine to this day and no discoloration.
