The same thing was happening to my trans, especially when it was cold or extremely hot. I had about 122K miles on it at the time. I changed out the fluid and filter. Then changed the fluid alone again about 1000-1500 miles later. Trans is shifting a lot smoother, especially when cold. If you have no experience I would recommend having a shop do it.

Be sure to specify that you DO NOT want the trans flushed, only fluid and filter changed. Flushing the trans and cooler can cause a whole world of problems that you don't want at this point.

P.S. Downshifting or dropping down to the next gear when accelerating is normal. "slipping" or having the engine RPM's raise without the car accelerating or the trans shifting erratically or jerking are signs of failure....not downshifting alone.
