So we had to pull the trans twice today. Found that the throwout bearing had mysteriously rotated 90 degrees, which explains some of the crunchiness of the pedal just before the clutch gave out.
Tried taking the clutch off with the bearing in the correct orientation and the SAC mechanism reset, but it just did the same thing after testing a few presses of the pedal. Good thing we decided to test with a minimal amount of parts reattached.
Took it apart again pretty quickly and after some deduction, swapped the pressure plate out with another one. It worked.
Need to put it all back together tomorrow morning.
