Success! Re-used the OEM plastic mold and glued the alcantara to that. Went for a short drive. It's nice. Looks great, the shifts are smoother (less notchy) though I think it takes slightly more effort to move through the gears now. Overall I think it's great. Will try install the steering wheel this weekend.

Also, when I was reading the DIYs I read many stories of people smashing their face when trying to take the OEM shift knob off (apparently it's stuck on quite tightly). I didn't find it that hard, in fact it was quite easy lol.
