Would not worry about the drivers side sending unit for now unless you are a stickler for PM. Easy enough to do in the future if you think you need to replace it.

I always use my trip odometer along with fuel gauge to determine when I should refuel.

As I am teaching my daughter who is just starting to drive, when the car is at 1/4 tank, it is time to fuel up. Mainly to keep from forgetting and then being in a rush and pushing it because you have to be somewhere.
