I did it that way with dips too. The dip bars were high enough off of the ground that the dumbbell didn't touch the ground. I don't bend my knees during dips unless I have to because of clearance issues.
You must have nicer equipment where you exercise.. most of the bars/setups I use for pullups/dips aren't high enough that I can extend my legs... My colleague can get away with it but he's like 5'7.
