wow great thread! I just got a new key from the (s)dealer. Paid $178 for the fob & $122 for the lock cylinder. They delivered them to the dealer in 3 days. Programmed key in 10 sec works great. Dealer guy said the old key may "revive" if you reprogram at the same time. No luck, so I'm going to try some of the DIY's posted here. The E46 is an '01 so the key probably has been used a lot, so a mechanical failure is possible. I just replaced Alternator, power steering pump, water pump, PVC (oil separator) did the oil flush and replaced mobil 1 with Liqui Moli ..... what a difference, smoother than before also less "cranks" to start. So I know that mechanical things wear out. With the E46 replacing this stuff makes it run like new! OK wrong thread sorry..... now I did find a "fix it" guy for the diamond key.

I didn't use him yet but the cost is 1/2 what I paid!
To bad I didn't find him before..........

If anyone uses this guy please post good or bad review.
