Classic symptoms of a bad CV joint, it makes perfect sense. Noise changes with load on the joint. Basically if you have the axle ready to go, why don't you put it in to alleviate that as an issue.
Who's your local mechanic? I have been using a shop in Hudson, WI that has been doing a pretty good job with stuff and has been pretty reasonably prices. My two biggest complaints is how long they take to fix stuff and they are SO busy I can never get in in time. If there was another one in Minneapolis that I could use.....
