i understand the whole competition thing and camaraderie among CFers that rises almost to the level of a cult or a brotherhood. i just wanted to know if i was missing something else. i thought that maybe the combination of two things at once made them worth even more than the sum of their parts

The things that most people like best and that keep them coming back are the competitive nature of it and the sense of community that develops.
CrossFit is pretty much singlehandedly responsible for the decline in equipment pricing and the resurgence of olympic lifting. Those are the two main benefits I have seen from it personally.
