Most contractors are not allowed to carry weapons unless it is part of their contract and/or part of a security team (e.g. companies that provide security like Xe - formally Blackwater)
There are probably exceptions, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

For someone that claims to have been out in the field those picture look like they were taken on KAF. The one picture is of Kandahar pomegranates with the signs in English. The rafters and wall construction also don't look so much outside the wire. Also the school picture has some soldier without ballistic gear or weapons and no security detail. Picture was likely taken at the school on KAF.

There are quite a few armed contractors. Not all are Americans aswell. I met a few Brits that were armed up.
