Mount the lens to the tripod using the lens collar and then mount the body to the lens. That should give the whole set up a lot more stability than mounting the body to the tripod and then the lens to the body.

My $100 Manfrotto is an aluminum tripod so it's relatively lightweight and very sturdy. The only issue I have with it is that it's not a ball head and it takes forever to set up a shot with a 3-way tilt/pan head. That's my fault for choosing this model though.
