2001 w/HK no Nav Need new CD Player
So as far as I can tell the CD player in my 2001 325i is done for. It will play the first 10-15 seconds on a CD, then gets really scratchy (like a bad radio station) and then spits the CD out). The radio and line in still work, but the lack of CD player is starting to wear on me after a year.
So, my question is what to do about it. I have HK upgrade, but no NAV. I also have an older DICE iPod conversion hooked to the 6-Disc wiring (though I have awful interference on that). The button under AM/FM says SCAN / MODE (it does NOT say SCAN / CD). I believe this means it is an Alpine Model CD53, and not a Blaupunkt. Can someone confirm if this is accurate (without me needing to rip apart the dash to check the serial info)?
So far I see the following options:
-Replace the current head unit with one just like it. Advantages being it should be fairly cheap, plug and play, and not likely to run into nasty surprises. Disadvantages being all I will get is what I have now and a working CD player.
-Replace the current unit with a newer model Alpine CD53 that gives me the full OEM capabilities (iPod Data, Aux, Sirius, and MP3). Advantages being the full OEM capabilities. Disadvantages being it will cost more, and probably take some extra parts to get full functionality.
-Replace the current unit with an after-market head unit. Advantages being it will probably be cheaper than even a direct replacement OEM off e-bay and possibly add some functionality. Disadvantages being it will not look as nice, and I will have to get harassed to buy a cell phone by those annoying guys at Radio Shack each of the 23 times I will need to go there to get some sort of converter to make it work right.
-Go crazy and get a Dynavin. Advantages being it will be really cool. Disadvantages being that if I had a awesome M3 E46 I planned to pass on to my young child when he gets older OK, but for a 325i that I might trade in some day it is probably not worth the cost and effort.
Is there any options I missed? I am leaning towards getting a new model Alpine unit. Anyone know if I have an Alpine now, should the newer one be fairly plug and play or will it require add ons and converters? Any thoughts are helpful. Thanks!
