I am happy to report that I followed your lead yesterday evening and took out the splitter cable from the HU end and connected mono to the sub out rca but I use another splitter cable at the amp end in order to use left and right channels. I also electric taped up the unused plugs. The result is the engine noise has gone and the system is sounding more powerful than before and I drove into work 14 miles this morning and no cut outs.
