Anyone who slams down a bar they deadlift has improper form imo.
Once you come down from full lockout, you want to bend at the hips first (not the knees) and let the bar travel naturally down your legs as you "sit" down with it again. Your knees will bend naturally, you shouldn't be hitting them hard with the bar.
Smooth controlled motion, if it means you can't lift as much so be it.
