Power protection for new TV/theater install

I'm unsure of the best way to approach this.

I'm finishing my basement and I will have a built-in entertainment center. My plasma will be mounted to a wall within it. A few feet below will be the receiver, PS3 and other devices hidden behind a built-in in door.

What is the best way to get power from the TV to the lower level of my built-in that would be protected? I'm not sure I would feel comfortable using a receptacle surge protector. Ideally I will have all my devices and coaxial connected to Panamax or APC unit with UPS or some line conditioning for brown outs.

DO you think a wall-plate with an opening will work? I'm going to use one to run the HDMI down as I hate to limit myself with HMDI wall plates.

EDIT- What do you think about this:
