My Ride: 2006 E46///M3 zcp
A diabetic had a seizure, drove across two lanes of on-coming traffic, missed three telephone poles, hit the front of the store at the exact speed and angle to launch over a brick wall (see the short wall in the pics) through the glass windows, up into the drop ceiling and landed on my car. A car that I loved so much, I put it in my showroom so nothing would happen to it. This is a true story, Three months prior to this happening I found a paint shop that did A1 work, I gave them the car in pieces, I removed the bumpers, grille, headlights, trim, emblems- you get the idea. All the parts were put in boxes with detailed instructions for re-assembly. When I had saved the several K for the paint job (Im not rich, no family money-middle class guy) I met with all the people that were going to work on my car, I thanked them in advance for doing a great job and gave each of them $100.(I know its not a lot, but I thought if there was a chance that it would help the attention to detail I wanted, it was worth it-everyone likes a tip) I explained that I wanted the car to look showroom new, no tape lines, no overspray, etc,-Perfect is what I wanted. The paint shop called later on and told me "we have to tape around the windshield, or we could cut the gasket back and after the car is finished install a new gasket for around $200" - of course I told them- do it. When the car was being painted, I wet-sanded all the trim and gave each and every piece three coats of satin black. I also had removed the interior and had the carpet cleaned, and the seats, trim, re-dyed in the OE gray, I also put together a list of parts that I ordered from the dealership, new headlights, fog lights, trim, gaskets, clips-anything that showed signs of age. I got the car back after about a month, it took me three weeks to re-assemble everything. (I did find a swirl/fish eye in the pass. q.panel- they gladly fixed) The car was perfect, not a ding, rock chip, swirl, nothing. interior perfect- no side bolster issues, no cracks in the dash- nothing. The car was PERFECT! Two months before the "accident", a young arab guy (not that, that matters) was in the store one day and decided he wanted my car-(his parents owned some hotels here in Charleston, so he had family money I guess) he returned the next day with 20,000-cash, I explained that the car was not for sale, he was very un-happy when he finally left, he was at 25k- like I said, I loved my car. After the "accident", the persons ins. company explained to me that I would get a check for "book value" of $12,000-- I flipped out, "this was NOT my fault, I did not want this to happen, etc"-I had 20k in receipts, that paint job, cams, chip, evo2 front lip, car cover, intake, ACS interior etc..They did not care. They ended up giving me 14k (I went and talked to a family lawyer, he explained that he could get me more, but it would take 1-2 years and after he got paid maybe a couple thousand more- his recommendation-take what they are offering. It gets better (or worse I guess) I had to give the ins. company my title to get my 14k, I didnt have the title yet, why you ask, I had just made the LAST payment two weeks before the "accident". It was in the mail from the bank. There is more, my friend Tony asked me to buy the car back from the ins. company and he would give me that amount, plus 1k. I did, he parted it out for about 10k. (in his defense, he did offer to split the profits if I would help him take it all apart, take pics, help with listing/shipping etc.) I just could not do this,(could you) it was already way, way to painful an ordeal. I didnt want to pull the motor, and have to see that head cover that I worked on every night for a week with a dremel, taking it down to metal, taping it up, painting it with black engine paint, making it look like new again. I new this car inside and out, but just couldnt tear my baby apart for profit. I had worked hundreds of hours on every inch of this car to make it perfect. (I still do some work on the E46 M3 but not like the E30 M3 though) I was actually looking for an E30 M3 when I got the E46--I just could not find one that was close to the condition of the one I had for less then 30-40k. I found that it was hard to finance a car for 35k that is 20 years old as well. so, I am very happy with the E46 M3, for now, (I dont want this to sound crazy, but the E30 m3 almost seemed like it had a soul) I do hope that someday I can add a mint E30 like the one I had. With my luck, probably not.
