This. If the glass is scratched deeply enough, then the only safe, effective fix is a replacement windshield. The good news is that, if you don't have the rain-sensing wipers, the glass is not expensive.

And, if the windshield is already suffering from minor pitting (likely as the newest e46 is pushing 8 yrs old, it will seem much cleaner and be easier to drive behind, especially into the sun.
