Definitely do the expansion tank too, it's a more common failure point than the Thermostat. The thermostat might be throwing codes, but it won't cause your car to run out of coolant while driving.

I was driving my dad's e39 when his ET exploded, it was a terrible experience. I was at the U of MN (can't park inside anywhere) and it was one of those -20 degree days.
