There are plenty of ways to deaden sound at an affordable cost. Most true home theaters I have installed we put up panels around the entire room much like a real movie theater you would step into.

But there is an affordable way to go about this. First you need to diagnose your room and see where you are having problems with sound bounce. These are typically on the sides of the room about 2-3 feet in front of your normal viewing position. I will find you some information on independent panels, panels that you only need to put one up to deflect sound.
