Not a manager, just a grunt software engineer. Silicon Valley have higher compensation packages when compared to other parts of the country. Average salaries are around 80-90k, with very senior ppl getting upwards of 150-160k, excluding stock options. Managers in Silicon Valleys don't necessarily get paid more than engineers.

Btw, IT is a completely different field than SW/HW engineering. One is responsible for developing the networking products, while the other one is responsible for using it.
