Most MAF are heat sensitive, the more the air flow the more they cool. If you remove the honeycomb to increase flow you will just increase the rate in which the wires in the MAF are cooled, thus reducing performance. In the past I have taken out my MAF and sanded it larger to make reduce the flow the MAF sees while increasing the air flow. The result was an increase in timing and a increase on the dyno, but I it is not as easy as it sounds and other areas need special attention to correctly tune the engine. In all, remove the honeycomb and you could lose performance.
