The motor was over-heated. When this occurs, it is common for the bolt holes for the head bolts to strip out on the block. The head has been checked. The only thing the motor needs for reinstall is to be taken to a machine shop and have the head bolt threads thread-certed. There is actually a BMW tool to have this done.

Download the BMW catalog and look at page 3; you will see tool B115000.
