Well I've been stockpiling this stuff so I thought I'd share. Content is something you have all probably come across but I'm serving it up in one location. It's not exactly everything you would want to know just a bunch of stuff I like to keep handy and a lot of stuff that people seem to ask about before searching.

Feel free to add, but keep down the clutter and the OT and ask questions elsewhere.....Then again, do what you want.

Inspection II Turner Kit DIY
http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html/subcategory_detail.asp?modelcode=E46&subcat_id=167

IMHO: what I'm planning to do is performing the maintenance in this kit and taking iit somewhere to get a coolant flush and a visual inspection.

E46 325/330i Inspection II Package
Part #: INSP2M54
Applications: 2001 - 2004 325/330i/Ci (E46)

Inspection II Package for E46 325/330i/Ci. Click for more info.

Includes: BMW Synthetic 5W30 engine oil (7 quarts), OEM oil filter, Ate Super Blue brake fluid, A/C microfilter, Bosch spark plugs, OEM air filter, Red Line transmission and differential oil (2 quarts of each), OEM fuel filter. Optional items for the Do-It-Yourselfer are the Peake Fault Code/Reset Tool and/or a Bentley Service Manual.

An Inspection II consists of replacing all of the above parts as well as giving your car a thorough look-over. Much of the work is simply checking various parts and systems on the car which usually leads to more work that should or needs to be done. The above list is what BMW recommends to be done during an Inspection II (or every 40,000 miles). A home mechanic will have limited ability to give a car a complete Inspection II service so we recommend bringing your car to an experience BMW mechanic and having them complete the inspection for you. Keeping up with the maintenance on your car is the smart thing to do. For one thing, it prevents costly repairs in the future. For another, your car performs better, making aftermarket upgrades more worthwhile. And a well-maintained car with complete service records can add substantially to a car's resale value. Make sure you also order the Peake Code/Reset Tool -- resetting those Inspection/Service lights on your dash is the best method of keeping track of service intervals. You can also read and reset engine error codes thereby saving yourself a trip to the dealer (and the charge for reading the codes).

Currently as of this revised/updated post (Jan 18, 2010) of post #166 above , Germain BMW is the cheapest followed by Tomkinson BMW. For sensors always go genuine, unless you know the OEM. Towards the bottom are OEM and aftermarket parts. My advice is to shop around and make these places work for your business and some of the OEM/aftermarket places will match prices against each other. Online dealerships change pricing so double check your parts and prices across the sites. I have noticed that some dealerships utilizing the trademotion.com system do a flat percentage on parts across the board and even in one particular instance a while back I noticed a price difference depending on the part itself. However, generally most are a flat percentage difference across the board. Also, be aware of the any that may charge handling fees or high prices in shipping.

I'd like to add that some parts are bundled by BMW into a kit that's given its own BMW part number (e.g. the Cold Weather CCV package) and some websites create their own kit bundles (e.g. VCG). Make sure you know what's in the kit first, and there's at least one site that was charging more for the "special price" kit than for the individual parts (hey $15 is $15).

Finally, check out the comments here on customer service. The cheapest price isn't fun when you get promises that are never delivered. And read the small print like "upon an approved account" - whatever that means.

Thank you for that list of dealers. It turns out that Tomkinson is cheaper than Tischer (which is apparently now known as BMW of Silver Spring), and as Tomkinson is more centrally located, shipping from them is cheaper and faster than from Germain, even though they're slightly more expensive than Germain. bmwmercedesparts.com seems to have the best parts prices overall.

You might also add ECStuning.com to the list.

Good point about BMW vs. OEM vs. aftermarket parts. I've been disappointed a couple times getting parts from BavAuto as they seem to ship a lot of OEM stuff without disclosing what you're getting beforehand (which is something ECS does and allows you to compare).

ebmwparts.com
Peabody BMW of MA

Prices highly competitive with Husker (bmwmercedesparts.com) but with so much better service. You are able to see part updates with what parts are in stock and on order. You receive messages about the ETA of parts and when it will ship. You receive shipping notifications and tracking numbers. By far the best dealership I have come across buying parts from the last two years--wish I found out about them sooner.

The same dealer and people run bmwpartsmass.com but prices are higher :shhh: so make sure you go to ebmwparts.com to keep that one alive. I have not asked them but wonder if it is an experiment they are running to see which site gets higher sales? :hmm:

Shop around for the prices youself and see and compare Peabody with other dealerships I have listed in previous posts in this thread. I am not affiliated with them nor others but just for places with low prices and great service :4ngie:

New to E46 fanatics

Hello. Just joined. Been driving my BMW's since 1997. Current ride is E46 M3 since new 2002. Little older than I thought it would ever get but still love everything about it except the friggen battery . have replaced X2 , not bad i know , need to again ,used oem in the past ,fear factor from dealer, "jeeze you can put in someone elses battery but.... " Well I do a lot of my own work on my car and the only thing ive lost so far are the huge bills. Im sure this has been addressed in the past but if you can direct a newbe to this site id appreciate it .

#195 ·
Im sure this has been addressed in the past but if you can direct a newbe to this site id appreciate it .
What the hell does this even mean?

Which newbe (sic) would you have me direct to the E46fanatics site? Or are you asking one of us to direct you around this site?

If so, look up at the dark red bar and find the word "search". That should get you around quite nicely.

Curious, though. I have two 2001 330Cic's each with the original battery, one at 97,000 miles and one at 120,000. So why does your M3 eat batteries? AND

PLEASE DON'T reply in this thread, your question has absolutely nothing to do with "Info collected that you might like to know".

Seriously. The system won't work if you abuse it. (Meaning keep your posts germane to the title of the thread.)

#197 ·
Wow 6 years since I started this thread. Still an enthused owner of my 330Ci. It will be turning 10 this March and I will have been the owner for 7 of those years, Time Flies!

The car is still running strong with mostly preventative maintenance from many links in this thread. Other than recently replacing my leaking differential seals and getting my post cat 02s changed I have proudly performed all of my own maintenance on my car. This is still a great forum with tons of information.

Car purchased in 02 mileage: 28500

Current mileage @ 10 years of New England weather: 167,000

Oil changed every 7500k
Oil: Mobile 1 extended performance up until ~100k
Oil: Castrol Syntec titanium 100k ~current (I know not LL approved but I change at 7500)

Original:
Battery
Vanos seals
Valve cover gasket
CCV valve
Suspension

30000 Inspection I
60000 Inspection II
69500 Control Arms/Bushings
84500 Waterpump/Thermostat/Belts/Hoses/Tensioners/Expansion tank
85900 Brakes/Rototrs Axis metal masters stock rotors Brake fluid superblue
90000 Inspection I
105000 Replaced leaking expansion tank with another updated. (to think it leaks after I preemptively replace the sucker)
110168 Swaybar End Links
120000 Inspection II Pre/Post 02 sensors
122000 Fuel Filter Brake/Clutch fluid superblue
122300 Steering wheel guibo (I think this had a placebo effect)
123000 DISA Valve
129000 Minor front end accident, not my fault. New bumper/hood radiator and some other bits and bobbles up front. (Car looks new, wait did I go from sad to making out on this?)
135800 Belts/Alignment
136500 Lower intake boot (wow I should have done that sooner probably)
138500 Mass air flow sensor (Was chasing a problem may not have needed it but......)
145000 Left Tie rod alignment (Ummmm hit a curb, day off the next day bmw dealer replaced in an hour)
157000 Differential seals bushings and front control arm bushings

I consider everything on that list preventative maintenance or normal wear and tear.

One thing I highly advice especially for those cold climate folks is keep you undercarriage and engine bay clean. It makes for much easier work and in my mind and eyes keeps all the electrical proper. I think in the back of my head also that taking a car you obvious put effort into maitaining into a shop it shows and a "special treatment effect is present" Although that could be in my imagination :0

hey, im new to this forum and own a bmw yet but i wanna get either 2004 325ci or 330ci i live in lebanon gas is realy expensive so is there a big diffrence between the 325 nd the 330 fuel consumption? and is the 325 under powered or will i be happy with its performance compared to a 330.. id realy appreicate anyones opinion

#201 ·
:hi:Hi

I got a question,
I didn't know where else to ask in this forum

My 330(ci)'s sitting on 225(front)'s and 255(rear)'s. Unfortunately I have that ugly stock wheel gap that comes with the sport suspension.
What kind of springs and spacers would you guys prefer?
Im specifically lookking for the combo that would give me the most bang for the buck since its and old car I'm only looking to spend around ~500.

Is there a link for removing Buisness CD deck? Looked through this whole thread and didn't find it. Also looked under the audio section, which I'm sure it's there, but didn't find anything titled that. Can someone please provide me a link, it would greatly be appreciated.

Hey guys, I just wanted to jump in here for a second cause I just picked up some staggered 18's, 18x8 and 18x9 and I was told to go with 225/45/18 in the front and 255/40/18 in the back. I feel like this set up is a little too high of a sidewall and I'm wondering if I should of went with a 40 in the front and 35 in the back. Whats the preferred set up for no rubbing and to not have to mod anything? This is on my 02' 330ci btw...any info would be great...
