box will take room... i took 2 kickers and made a baffle board on the rear deck.. it take no space and looks alright. the sounds is not as nice as the box.. but the trunk is already so damn small.
currently i have a sealed box for my 2 10w6 subs. It is a small box because i had it made to fit behind the rear strut bar. with a sealed box does the size of the box itself matter?
I have an article on my website that explains different types of boxes and pros/cons.
Go to: http://home.comcast.net/~customcarstereo/ then go to the "components" section, and then select "subwoofers".
In general, a ported box is more efficient (i.e for the same power level, it will be louder), but typically a ported box isn't as tight and doesn't have as good low frequency extension as a sealed box. A ported box will also be larger than a sealed box for the same woofer. I've had both setups with my JL subs and ported is good if you like rap and boomy type of bass, but sealed is the way to go if you want it tight and clean
