I just finished replacing a lot of my suspension (Rear shocks/coils, front struts/coils, control arms, fcab, and inner ball joint) and now I Have a rattle whenever I go over a decent bump in the road. What I'm wondering is, is there different torque specs for I models vs. XI?
I'm under the assumption that one of the components is still loose. I'm going to start by tightening down the strut hat nut a little more once I get a hold of the right size spark plug socket. besides that, do I have to remove the front axles for tighten the outer ball joints more?
Just had a similar issue. It turned out to be my front sway bar links. If everything else is replaced, that's your likely culprit. Check the sway bar bushings while your under there...
my front axle was in the car; i was assembling it after installing the new CV axle as a matter of fact.... i am talking about the sway bar link, not ball joint.
On the sway bar link, there is a torx built into the end of the stud on the OE part. Otherwise hit it with an impact driver, if needed you can hold the stud by wedging a channel lock between the link and strut tower. Mine came out just by using the torx and a box end wrench after I loosened it up with the impact...
i have new link on, dont now if that makes a difference, but i was able to get nearly fully torqued with the impact alone. i did make sure with the torx and wrench though.
you could also have a lose door hinge. i read that a guy thought it was his suspension and after months found his driver side door hinge was a little lose and the door was making the rattle noise.
Impacts aren't good for ball joints, use the torx and a ratcheting box wrench and you should be able to loosen/tighten in minutes. Bonus points for using a not ratcheting box and a ratchet with torx socket to do the same job but faster.
Agreed on the install side of the process. I only use the impact when trying to free the old part. Mine were corroded pretty bad, so a couple squirts of PB, and a hit with the impact loosened them right up. Definitely would not use the impact to install the new...
ok, fine, also says gearbox oil is lifetime and that we have to use a lock valve on our manual clutch. cops want me driving under 55, and my mom wishes i would go back to school:evil:
12 volt impact guys,, not a 100psi impact wrench,, thing barely does 10 newtons!! furthermore if you read my post, i finished torque with a 16 and a torx wrench.
Not yet. I'm going to try to tighten the ball joints more before I order more parts. From the sound, I'm fairly certain it's all by ball joints. I just have to drive home from school to work on it.
Well, when you get her up off the front wheels, give those links a tug, if they move, you'll have found your culprit... Good luck!
