quick Q, I have a ZF 5 speed that is out of the car, (nothing hooked up to it except the shifter) and I was wondering if I should be able to shift it into reverse. I can feel all 5 gears but it wont engage reverse. It feels like something is blocking me from moving it all the way to the left. Is that normal? :hmm:
Reverse is all the way right and back if you don't have any of the shift linkage connected. It's hard to get it into reverse though since you have no leverage pulling on that tiny piece.
Edit: Just saw you had the linkage attached. What you feel "blocking" it could just be the normal resistance you get when shifting into reverse, again with the transmission out of the car it's going to be hard to shift because there is less leverage.
Thanks for the replies. I have the shift linkage connected. It wont let me move the shifter all the way left to engage reverse. hopefully its just the pin if anything.
The transmission doesnt have any fluid in it so that could be part of the problem I suppose  Whatever, I ordered the shift pin service kit from BMW (23-11-7-542-726) anyway. Ill put a DIY up later if I have the energy...
