I ****ed up bad. camshaft-oil problem

if all you are going to do is flame me, just leave the thread and thats that. I ****ed up badly the other night. The oil light came on, i got oil, put it in and accidently dropped the oil cap down below the engine. heres where i ****ed up- i temporarily plugged the uncapped oil hole with a sock and the sock got sucked into it after about 5 mins of driving. its wrapped around the cam shaft-im pretty sure thats what it is... and i need some advice on how to get it out without shelling a shitload of money out to bmw to take it in there. should i unbolt the top piece there and cut it out and then flush the whole thing with some stuff at kragen or just try to cut it out piece by piece through the hole with a sharp razor and take the pieces out with needle nose pliers and then flush it?

please any advice or help on this crap move i made would really really really help me out.

you will need to remove the valve cover and get it all out. The Question is why didn't you retrieve the oil fill cap from under the car? BMW supplies you with all the neccesary tools to do remove your scratch panel.

thanks for the reply. it was dark and i couldnt see anything at the time, i just wanted to get home to where i would have some more light and things just didnt go as i thought. im a total dunce. so taking off the valve cover would be my best bet?

edit: then towing the car to a spee dee oil change, definitely not drive it, right?

That really sucks man!

I am not sure about the fix, but I would think that there a fibres that must be floating around in the oil even when you remove the sock. A solid drain and flush are essential. Good luck.

ok, ive given this a little more thought. like i said i am very tight with money right now, but i have a few resources that might help me out. i have my moms AAA card for a free tow, i have a chevron card that my dad thankfully lets me use and spee dee oil change takes chevron cards. im gonna go down there right now to see if they'll be able to help me with the problem

A quick lube place will not be able to help you with your problem. You need to take it to a real shop.

take it to a certified mechanic.. a german/BMW if u can find one..
tell them to take the socks out..

and not sure if SPEE D OIL place would have oil for an M3.. i doubt it

Dude, that just sucks, there's no easy way around it. You gambled and unfortunately got bit. I think you shouldn't chance it and make it worse by finding a cheap solution to the problem. I would get the car to a certified BMW repair mechanic either a dealer or wherever. A sock wrapped around the camshaft is some serious sh1t. I would be more worried about making it worse than saving money at this point. Suck it up, find the money and get it done right. Don't chance it on making it worse and do real damage.

try doing it your self first, unbolt the silver bolts on the valve cover, and see if u can get the sock to come out..PULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL as fukin hard as u can...see what u can get it out of it...after that, do a full engine flush. remember USE 60W 10 Engine oil from BMW! NOT that jeffy lube ****!

you coulda drove the car home SAFELY without the oil cap off...i did that once. i checked the oil level and forgot to put the cap on. drove it pretty hard for 15mins and what do i smell afterwards? hmm oil burning LMAO ****ing stupid me. cleaned the oil and such added oil afterwards and found the cap under the car. learn form your mistakes man. gl

bro, if the sock got jammed in any part of the valvetrain...its not going to be as simple as just cutting it free....im sure something is bent....and work on the valve train is very labor intensive and expensive....

My guess is in the end they're gonna have to practically rebuild the engine to make sure no fibers or pieces of sock are stuck anywhere.

hahaha um yeah this is priceless... I worked in a family garage for the last two years... your def gonna wanna take that to at least an independent garage that specializes in BMW. Once you get in to your cam shafts if you dont know what your doing your going to kill your car. spending the extra money now will save you money from a full rebuild

Sorry for the picture but I couldn't help it. Tow it to a good local BMW shop like Rennworks and pay the money to do the repair right. Forget SpeeDee man. Your way beyond anything they can do. You screwed up, so now you'll have to pay.
