Just purchased silver 01 330cic and need opinions, please.

I hate the amber corners of course and I'm trying to figure out whether smoked or clear corners would look better w/ silver. The headlights are xenons with the titanium trim. I will probably also replace the bumper reflectors and side markers so I just trying to figure out what will look best from an overall standpoint. I've done plenty of searches and haven't really seen much to guide me.

The car is silver w/ black top and tinted windows. Thanks for any suggestions.

Brian

P.S. My white 99 E46 sedan with SP and PP will be on the market soon due to my new purchase.

I recently purchased an '01 330ci (titanium silver coupe w/ tinted windows) too. Congrats on a great choice! I replaced the amber corners just yesterday with clears, and I love 'em. I was debating between clears and smoked too, and I'm definitely happy with my choice. Also replacing the side markers with clears and swapping the amber/red tails for white/red (just as soon as those packages arrive). Updating the lights is the biggest "bang for your buck" as far as cosmetic improvements go.

I don't think you can go wrong with the smoked lights, either...the clears were just my personal preference, but both will be a big upgrade over the amber.

Good stuff, thx Art. Some follow ups -

Did you go with OEM or aftermkt on your lenses?
Did the corner and sides come with amber bulbs?
Where did you end up purchasing? - So many options having trouble narrowing down.

I like the idea of switching the tails but am trying to hold off! Are you going DIY?

Thx.

I went with aftermarket, off ebay. They were only $33 shipped, and the quality seems to be very good, although I'm sure I'll get a better idea of that as time goes on and the elements begin to have an impact. Here's a link to an identical set to mine, from the same seller (highly recommended): E46 CRYSTAL CLEAR CORNERS

I've attached a few pics of them installed on my car -- should give you a good idea of how they'll look on yours. I tried to get one with the lights actually illuminated, but it's a little bright outside right now to really show them. As for the tails, it should be a very simple DIY. I didn't order the LED style lights, because they're more expensive than I care to spend, and I actually prefer the look of the standard bulb-type tails. The corners I ordered did not come with amber bulbs, but it only took a quick trip to the auto parts store and $3.50 to remedy that problem. I've ordered silver bulbs to replace the temporary amber ones, and will be making the swap as soon as they arrive.

great car... same as mine... I went with the clears as well but now considering smoked for a change... had to buy two different pairs of clears though..my first pair off of e-bay didn't exactly fit...had gaps and stuck out a bit... ended up buying it from a website... which one i can't remember... just curious...how much did you get your car for and with what mileage?

It's possible that you needed to undo the two screws holding in the headlights and just nudge them out a quarter-inch for a second to get the aftermarket corners to slide in. That's what I did, and they fit perfectly now.

I bought my 330ci in January of this year with 45,000 miles on it for $17,900 (manual, sport/premium packages, sunroof delete). It was relatively underpriced, so I flew from Atlanta to Miami to buy it and then drove it back. I had a BMW specialist in Miami give it a full prepurchase inspection, and he said it was in excellent shape overall and had a gapless service history, clean Carfax and zero evidence of paint work. Good enough for me.

Factoring in airfare from Atlanta to Miami (only $140 on 12 hours' notice!) gas costs for the drive home ($200 or so, but I criss-crossed Florida visiting friends and showing off the new ride) and new rear tires (they were 75% worn when I bought it), it came out to about $18,600 all said -- still not a bad deal. I haven't had a day of trouble with it, and have absolutely no regrets.

nicw move... I never considered buying a car from outside my area... seems like car prices in general are higher around here... now I know to really shop around next time... paid $23K for mine with only 23K miles on it... I know it's a bit high but it was in flawless condition...(not anymore thanks to my idiot drunk friend who hit a tree trunk with my passenger door...)

Here is what I would do on a silver cab with silver headlights:

Crystal Clear Corners

Crystal Clear Sidemarkers

Clear Bumper Reflectors

or

Body Colored Painted Reflectors

You may also want to upgrade your turn signal bulbs to our LED Turn Signals or Stealth Bulbs to get rid of the egg yolk effect.

Thanks for the pics Art and TKC. I've decided go with the standard clears all around. I can't wait to get rid of my amber front end.

I've got the same car (coupe, not vert). IMHO:

OEM clears only. (Got mine by waiting for them to come up on here).

Go to the trouble of finding (and importing, if necessary) Philips Silvervision bulbs. I have those in the rear, and Stealths in the front. I find that the Stealth color is too dark and less bright than the Philips. Just my 2 cents.

Enjoy and good luck!

Is there a significant difference between the OEM clears and the aftermarket clears?

Between OEM and our clears, honestly not really. I have OEM clears on my car (purchased them before aftermarket were available) and I cannot tell the difference in terms of quality or installation. We 100% stand behind the integrity of our clears so if you have any doubts you can rest assured that you are receiving a quality piece that is proven if purchased through us.

Thanks Nick, but I'm all taken care of with my lights -- clears all the way around now. I got the aftermarket clears, and was asking for an opinion on the difference because I haven't really seen the OEM ones up close. Mine are the Helix crystal clear corners, for what that's worth. I think they look great.

Question for you about changing tail lights, though. I just installed my clear tails this afternoon, and they didn't include the black plastic piece that keeps water off the housing. Is there an easy way to remove the OEM piece and transfer it over (see attached pics)? I tried sliding it out, but it didn't want to budge, and I didn't want to force it. Thanks in advance if you can offer any help on this one.

Never mind...I just figured it out. Used some needlenose pliers and light outward pressure on the interior tabs. Bingo.

Art, Did you replace the inner tail pieces too? Just wondering since you can do it either way. I figure if you don't do the inners then the you could end up with mis-matched coloring with the plastic.

Yeah, I replaced the inner tail pieces at the same time, although they weren't part of a package deal with the outer pieces. I bought the inners off a fellow forum member here (they were OEM off his '02 330CI, and were in like-new condition). I was also a little concerned that the colors wouldn't match, but it's not an issue at all -- the set looks like it came from the factory together. I'll snap a couple more pics when I get home from work so you can see the final results...I've finished with replacement of every exterior light, other than the front bumper reflectors (haven't arrived in the mail yet) and headlights (they were already bi-xenon). The difference is just night and day -- couldn't be happier with the new look.
