Engine Burning Oil

Hey

My car is almost reaching 120k miles, i use royal purple 10w30 oil.
i drive around 1000 miles and then the oil light pops up, and its low on oil.

Im thinking it's because of the high mileage that it is burning oil i dont see any leakage of oil.

And I always have to carry an extra bottle of oil.

Any thoughts about this.

my oil light comes on for like 10 secs even when i just changed the oil. even though the oil level is fine on the dipstick. could just be the oil level sensor, hows the oil look on the dipstick?

For one thing, you're using the wrong oil.

Are you checking the dipstick or just going by the oil light?

You should be using BMW 5w30 or Mobil 1 0w40...or a few others but those are my recommendations. Make sure you check the dipstick. In case you haven't heard...our oil level sensors are garbage. Mine comes on frequently, even the day I change my oil. After you run your car, open your oil cap...does it smell like burnt oil? Does your exhaust smoke?

bmw's by design comsume a certain amount of oil. it is used to lubricate the valve train. if it was just low enough to set the light off, top it up.

if you have the proper oil level it could be a few things. bad oil level sensor, moisture contamination, or if you take short trips the oil will get aerated and throw the sensor off. etc etc.

just keep an eye on it with the dipstick, its work since the begining of time, and is better habit then relying on the oil light.

If your oil light is coming on AT START UP and only flashed on for a few seconds and then turns off, you have a dead oil level sensor. Follow the DIY in my sig to replace it.

If your oil light is coming on AT SHUT DOWN of your car, you are low on oil, check your dip stick. If you are truly losing oil, one thing you might look into is the Oil Separator.
