Unhappy Engine burning oil quickly?!

my 01 330 convert just had an oil change about a month ago, and the oil light has recently began turning on a few minutes into my driving. I took it to a local mechanic and he says my oil is low, he mentioned something that it might need an overhaul which seemed extreme and daunting. Im hopeing he just didnt know what he was talking about and its most likely a leak or somthing. The car does has 114K miles on it, which is high for its year. ANYONE know whats happening here?

Probably just low and/or the wrong kind of oil.

If you want to find where the oil is going have your mechanic perform a leakdown test.
This test will tell you where the oil is going, could be valve seals, valve guilds or bad rings

I am having the same issue with burning oil. It seems it is getting progressively worse. Every 700 miles or so my oil light comes on after I shut off the car. I check the dip stick and the level is below normal and I would put about 1 quart back in. I've already changed the PCV (aka oil separator) but it didn't fix the problem. I am using Synthetic Castrol 10W-40. I know some say to use 5W-30. I'll give that a try and see if it improves things. Hard to believe a slight difference in oil viscosity will make any significant changes.

My car has about ~114K miles.
