Too many lawyers

Next time you're on your way to work count how many lawyers offices you see. I counted ~45 offices and I'm only 6 minutes away from my job. This is why our damn country is so sue happy. Half of my friends are currently in law school to make it even better

I often wonder if that many lawyers are needed? Do they make as much money as people think they do? I mean how much money is there to go around if there is an office on every corner...

From what I read a lawyer out of school does not make all that much more than someone in a 4yr field but usually end up making good money in time.

50k seems about right based on no research at all for a 1st year grad.

I believe it too.
The US doesn't even come close to that figure. Brazil for example has almost as many lawyers as the US per capita with almost as many people.

It makes sense that we would have the most with the largest economy. but 95% is a crazy figure.

9% is probably closer.

big law firms pay starting associates around 160 (anywhere from 120-160+).
Probably can make up to 250-300k as a 5th year + associate.

You don't start making the big bucks until you reach partner, and profits per partner vary for the different firms out there. If you go to the #1 firm like Wachtell Lipton, it's around $5 million per year per full equity partner.

However, these are only the top firms and making full equity partner is becoming increasingly rare. Plus, your life will suck for about 10 years being on-call virtually all day and on weekends, and working to midnight or later and taking work home.

The top 20 firms all have PPP around $1million, with the top 5 having several million.

Some mid-level firms pay out at 160 or around there, but their PPP is 500k and under.

Public sector, nonprofit, etc. starve.

I wouldn't worry as much about pay, but more about whether or not you love the reasoning and logic of the law. It's different, and perverted at times. YOu have to be able to do this 24/7 for the rest of your life. If you are doing it for money, you just ruined your life. YOu have to love it.

you can google any Supreme Court opinion, and read through it. If you can't get through it with ease, then don't bother with law school. You will be reading cases all day long.

No.

Business and Law degrees are everywhere, and don't make the same kind of money they did in the old days.

Engineers and Medical staff are sitting pretty, as they are contributing to society, not suing it. That and everybody's parents told them to go to law school or get a degree in creative dance as it "makes them happy", hence you have the president standing up asking people "stop fvcking around we need more engineers". Keep going to law school, we don't have enough of them.

FWIW I can count on two hands the number of attorneys I know. A lot of them hate it because the act of being a lawyer is typically a predatory profession.

I'm the youngest Engineer I have ever worked with, next youngest are a pair of 28 year olds, everyone else is older.

Stay outta STEM guys, more money for me.

You know not all lawyers are in the business of suing others, correct?

Tax lawyers, estate lawyers, trust lawyers, probate lawyers, family lawyers, water rights lawyers, property rights lawyers.....and so on and so on.

Many times lawyers will locate their offices close to 1) each other and 2) the local courthouse. This saves them time when traveling to each other's offices for depositions and when traveling for court appearances. You just happen to have to drive through one of these concentrated areas.

M'eh. I think it's like any industry...there are shady ones and good ones. Typically the shady ones create a negative image for the majority.

Perhaps OP should focus on watching the road during the short 6 minute drive to work rather than count lawyer offices... :shrugs:

Sounds like the OP should get some exercise instead of driving 6 minutes to work.

A factoid I have heard several times.........the US has 5 percent of the world's population and 95 percent of its lawyers.
I believe it too.

I think that is why I saw a 'lawyer' driving a Toyota Yaris will a plastic applique on the side of his car advertising ........John Doe, Lawyer cell phone, criminal cases only.

yeah.......like if I have a real problem with the law, I 'm gonna go with the guy advertising on the side of his car. Maybe that is his office too.
