Is this a good price?

My mechanic said I need new front strut plates, and the price w/out labor is $285 for both driver/passenger. (Labor is "free" since there is something else that the insurance is picking up).

Is this a good price? I am not sure if this is the same part, but in BavAuto they have Front Upper Strut Tower bearing for $39 each, for a total of $78.

Sorry, I have no idea what a front strut plate is also called.

Thanks

well not sure on the price. but so you know there is a spring plate that sits on top of the spring then a washer and then the strutmount(strut bearing) and then you have the nut that holds it all together.but cant see that part being that expensive,im thinking that has to be with labor.

I replaced my shocks, springs and shock mount and took apart the whole strut and I didn't have strut plates in mine. They are known as the rough road kit. Don't bother with this "offer".
Don't buy BavAuto strut mounts they are Uro brand from China and self destruct. Buy the OE Sachs strut mounts from Pelican for $45 each.

Thanks guys. They said if I didn't get them done they would just be noisy. He said one side was really tight and one side was really loose. W/out labor was $285. With labor was $462.

Go to an alignment shop, they specialize in tightening front ends. Probably you can get an alignment and the struts tightened for $150.

Xi_ter How can you tighten up a strut? Curious I'm a ford tech and never heard of that before, is this something bmw specific? And how do you not have the strut plate, did your aftermarket struts combine the plate and bearing mount together?

The alignment shop tightened the top nut, part #3 while holding the shock piston.

In my car, part #12 and #13 were not installed over the Sachs mount #1. #1 just bolted up to the strut tower. Canadian roads aren't that bad I guess, maybe for rally versions?

I think the OP is being asked if he wants parts #12 and/ or #13 installed. If these were installed the gap would have been even bigger so I would have taken them out if they were there.

$285 seems pretty high for any of the parts you're talking about. I'd get a second opinion for sure.
