Good Mechanic - SF Bay Area

Hey everyone,
I just tried to get my car smogged and it didn't pass. I need to find a mechanic in my area that has the tools necessary to diagnose and, hopefully, repair what might be broken. I need someone who has a good reputation and isn't going to try and get over on me. Being that I've been unemployed for 2 years, I also need someone who is fair with their pricing.

I know, I ask for a miracle but that's the state of my situation so any references you guys (and girls) can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Just a thought...
Would a dirty MAF cause a P0171 or P0172 error? I had a hose at the MAF replaced about a year ago. I'm wondering if that's related?

So, I'm assuming no one in the bay area knows of a trustworthy BMW mechanic?

Can you be more specific in area? There are some good shops in the East Bay like Vallejo (like Milt's Garage) which are too far for most people who live on the Peninsula or South Bay. Likewise there are a few good shops in Cupertino or Campbell that are too far for most people living in San Francisco. Bavarian Motorworks in Milpitas and TrackStar in Mountain View have good reputations, though I've never been to either. I had a PPI done at Dinan in Mountain View and thought they were good, though they are more expensive than most indies (but less expensive than the dealer). I also liked Schatz and Krum in Sacramento, but that only helps if you live out towards Sacramento/Davis.

I'm new to the BMW world but I'm good at chasing down emission related issues. Pm me with your smog check results and we can talk about some possible causes. Thanks
