Two new mods

Just finished these today... For your viewing pleasure:

1. OEM Autofold mirrors.

Since my car is newer than 03/2003, it contains ribbon connectors. This makes the install very easy. Simply buy a set of Euro mirrors, replace the manual mirror switch with the power fold switch, then code the car appropriately. Voila!

2. Custom ZHP backlit shift knob:

Leather Z sells this... And a user on m3forums.net sells a better one (this one below). He takes the template from a Z4 //M 6 speed backlit shift knob and sticks it on a ZHP shift knob and snakes the wires through the hollowed out knob. Then you wire it to the light in the ashtray.

Ha...

Thanks

With the full Dinan kit (exhaust, intake, throttle body, software), I'm not going to get any more HP out of this car unless I SC or turbo it... Which I have no intention of doing to an engine with 111k miles on it...

Glad I could help you get off Trizzuth!

BTW, the Flutie catch was amazing--he was my childhood hero, and I won a radio contest a few years ago to do that catch thing. There were about 15 people there that got to do it and half of them dropped it... I was the last to go and was petrified of not pulling it in. If you dropped it, then re-shot the scene from the 10 yard line. Not quite the same effect as reliving the hail mary... The best part was the announcer who just read whatever you filled out on the sheet for hometown (like "Bob Smith from Boston") so I ninja edited mine to say "the hood."

Yes... And this one is even better than the Leather Z one...

ebay:

LeatherZ
Much better than eBay, but still not100% uniform on the light pattern (cant see the blue M stripe)

Deadlysyns from M3forums
He adds extra LEDs so the backlight glow is uniform.

Why these are so expensive now (from LeatherZ site):
Why the M 6 Speed insert costs more

The Illuminated M 6 Speed Insert is difficult to get. The only way I can get this insert is to purchase a second shift knob from BMW with this particular insert. If you want to save the $115 charge, you can send me the insert from your stock shift knob and I can use it. I will even take $15 off the price of the Illuminated ZHP Shift Knob (making it $160). Please call me for more details. Shift Knobs purchased with this insert not eligible for return or exchange: The insert is too difficult for me to get and too expensive. Alternatively, if you would like to purchase a shift knob with no insert, so you can install the one from your car yourself, I can sell you one with no insert (If you decide to get a shift knob with no insert, I will take $15 off the price (making it $160) though there are no returns on a shift knob sold without an insert).

OK, so I just enabled an additional feature of these folding mirrors. Check this video out. You can fold / unfold the mirrors by holding the lock and unlock button respectively.

So cool. And super useful for me, since I have to park on the side of a busy road to pickup my daughter every day from school.

that's fawkin fresh Steve! Why does it look like it takes you a bit long to do that with the key? what is the exact sequence you need to do on the key to make that work?

when you hold the unlock button, does that interfere any way with your ability to put all the windows/sunroof down using the key?

did you need to have the dealer code the key to do that, or was this a DIY?

That was just me fumbling with the camera and pausing to show the locks open etc...

Sequence:
- Press lock to lock the doors
- hold lock down for 5 seconds, mirrors flip in

- hit unlock to unlock doors. The mirrors automatically unfold when unlock is pressed on remote.

No, it bumps the window opening to the end of the sequence. Once the mirrors are flipped in if you press and hold lock, the windows will start rolling down. I can also now roll the windows up, because of the coding.

US dealers cannot code this. Because this was never sold to the US market and not offered as a "retrofit" dealer systems cannot code this. You need to use either NCS Expert (BMW above dealer tool) or AutoLogic (aftermarket company that sells BMW coding software for $30k--most independent shops will use this also). Those 2 programs allow you to change the Vehicle Order (VO) of the car. Basically, you tell the car that it should have come with option code 313, and voila!

I added the exact details are here at the bottom of Delmarco's thread (#10 thru #12):

I love this so far--looks perfect. Plus, I'd replaced my ashtray with the rubber coin tray, so the ashtray light was lying unused. Connecting it was simple.

that is so freakin sick that the mirrors do that with the key. So now the windows go down when holding lock, rather than unlock? Fresh that you can put them back up with the remote too and not have to insert key into keyhole and turn and hold...

It will function like the e60 in this video

Basically holding unlock will unfold the mirrors and roll the windows down. Holding lock will roll the windows up and fold the mirrors in.

you ace-face:
