Using the 5th wheel...

So I got a nail in my rear passenger side wheel a long time ago. I patched it up and it holds air relatively well. Every month or so I have to add a couple PSI, but at this point it's getting rather annoying. My question is, can I throw my spare wheel on after getting it balanced or do I have to do both back wheels, or even all 4 wheels? The spare has never been used so the tread is obviously different than the current wheels. How should I go about doing this? Just buy a new tire for my punctured wheel and throw the spare onto the driver side rear? Not sure how replacing tires works with the AWD system. Thanks guys

Get a tire shop to put an inside patch on the tire.

If that doesn't work, you could buy a used tire with matching tread depth. Depending on the tread of the other tires, you may be looking at buying one, two, or four tires. 2/32-3/32" tread difference is supposedly acceptable.

Btw- its probably not a good idea to use a twelve year old tire if the spare is indeed original.

If you want to use the spare, for your own peace of mind have a tire shop take the tire off the spare and check for corrosion, clean it and then remount it. The tire even though old shouldnt be in terrible shape. It's located in the trunk unless you have a water leak or holes in the spare tire compartment then it should be good to go.

I believe (i'm sure some will correct me if i'm wrong) but you can have up to a 5% tire diameter difference within your tires before it would become a problem with your AWD. As far as the tread goes, even though the spare has more tread then your current tires have, I doubt you will be exceeding the 5% diameter difference.

"Every month or so I have to add a couple psi", really that is NORMAL for any tire/wheel combination. Outside temperature has a lot to do with tire pressure and tire air pressure is something that should be checked on a routine basis. Under inflated tires heat up more and wear out quicker than a tire that has the correct psi in it. Not to mention that, correct tire air pressure ensures good handling, better ride and longer tread life. As the outside temperatures change now from summer to fall/winter, tire air pressure should be checked at least once a month. Tire air pressure should be checked with "cold" tires, that is, before driving the car as even a short drive will heat the tire up some and give a slightly higher psi reading than a "cold" tire.
