It usually is something smaller. If it was on the bad side I think you would have noticed it being an obvious failure in the SMG. here is a good thread, ignore the first post.

ok yeah I didnt notice any gear slipping or other symptoms which was why it caught me by surprise that it came on. hopefully it's just a sensor or something because I just got back to college and already thinking about going home this weekend to resolve this issue asap.

This issue can cost anywhere from 1000-3000 depends if you DIY and buy new or used parts. It could be SMG pump or the actual transmission.

Scan the car and see what (if any) codes it has thrown/stored. Try replacing the SMG relay (salmon color in fuse box on drivers side by firewall in the engine bay). It's cheap and something that should be replaced periodically on SMG cars.

22, senior at Purdue. Paying for everything myself, titled to myself, and everything from gas, maintenance, mods, insurance etc is paid by me in full. don't put me with those other high school kids that e46 fanatics like to hate on so much. no offense to those guys
