Service and Repairs $6,000!!!

So I bought my 2004 m3 into the dealership today as my service light came on and I know I needed rear brakes, brake fluid flush and my washer fluid pump was broke. My car has roughly 62K miles on it and I already had Inspection I and II completed. When I got to the dealership they informed me that I was do for an Inspection service which would run about $1,600, brake fluid flush about $220, rear brakes $780. So this would have cost around $2,600 which is not chump change but reasonable (at least I consider it reasonable since I purchased an expensive car and I expect it to cost a decent amount to maintain).

Then I got the call for the dealership with the laundry list of things that I needed done. Please let me think if you guys think I am completely getting taken advantage of on based on the service and prices:

**All prices include tax and labor**

Tune Up/Inspection Service - 1,778
Wash fluid pump - 227
Rear Brakes (Rotors) - 781
Rear Control Arms - 667
Rear shock mounts - 460
Alignment - 300
Drive Belts - 276
Replace all hoses - 1,598

Total Cost = 6,087

Regarding the suspension I was told that my control arms were bent, could have been from hitting a pot hole or something. Said I didn't need to have it done right away but will cause tires to wear unevenly. Dealership told me my hoses and belts were on their way out. Said hoses were important because it would not be good if they broke and fluid got all over the engine (also said these should be replaced every 5 years).

Sounds like your car needs a lot of work throughout. Not clear on why you chose to take it to a dealership instead of an Indy shop.

and another falls victim to the bimmer stealerships... ive saved so much money doing the work myself, contrary to beliefs our cars are not that hard to work on, yes they can be a pain in the ass but there are enough diys to fix anything, they wanted 3400 to do my guibo and diff mounts and center support bearing, i found all the parts for 350 bucks online and a 6 pack of beer i bribed some friends to help... 355 vs 3400... pretty obvious there.

Im assuming it should be lower than half that! I'd definitely take it too an Indy shop, If not, DIY some of this stuff.

The problem is I do not have the equipment or know how to do the work myself. Also, with previous car I have had horrible experiences when I do not take the car to the dealership. I am yet to find a reliable mechanic that can work on high end cars. I know they are gonna be more expensive then doing the work myself or at an Indy shop, but I guess I want to know if they are straight up taking me for a ride on this one.

The hoses and drive belts can be done cheap. Crazy that they'd charge 200+ to replace a damn belt..

Brakes are easy too. Is the valve adjustment incorporated in their tune up price?

Wow, I guess it is worse then I thought! What would guys say is a reasonable price for all the above mentioned work?

Can't say since I would just DIY all of it aside from the alignment (nothing wrong with the fact that you're not, though). Price is going to depend somewhat on your location. Like Alan said, start something on the regional forums to find a reputable indy. If you're not a DIYer finding an indy you can trust is a necessity.

OP, you don't need to be handy to do lots of this. Plugs...lefty loosey...get the right ones. Coolant flush--$20. Belts..$40-50 maybe.

Air, cabin air filters...take 5 mins. fuel filter--don't smoke! Oil...1 hour if you let it drip.

If you don't have a brake pad warning indicator, but $10 caliper and see how much pad material you have left. I think the indicator triggers at around 3 mm of pad material...rotors are easy.

$100 in tools saves you a few thousand against the dealer. A few sleepless nights studying diys/watching vids...you've got a bit of this done.

I haven't done plugs on an M...sounds like it'd be fun! How far are you from the city?

Some fluids take some work, but most are easy.

Oh, and the hoses. I replaced my final engine cooling hose 1,000 miles ago or less...240K miles...mmmmkay?

The hoses don't fail ever, really...the 0-ring might leak at some point...and you should replace them when doing cooling system work since you're there anyway, but if they're not leaking...and they're not...just read cooling threads. You can replace your entire system in parts for $700 I think...and you don't need to anyway. When you learn enough...do the therm, ET, wp, and get the hoses then. Also, btw, by 'all the hoses' I guarantee you they meant 2-3 hoses...not the six you have (I'm pretty sure anyway).

I bet you have $2,000 in parts there if you did everything...less if you find prices at some of our well known sources like bmaparts.

think about it. A 150 piece craftsman tool set gets you to most places you'd go.

Idiots and pregnant women work on their cars here...I think you have the skills even if you don't think you do.

But, if you do give in stupidly to this fantasy wish of the dealer, please videotape your SA's face when you say "okay."

buy parts online and ebay.

monthly maintence is IMPORTANT and CRUCIAL

$800 for rear brakes?
Rear brakes are < 2hr labour, rotors ~$200/pair and pads < $100/pair. Thus $500 max... yet I bet you don't need rear rotors as the rear rotors wear very slowly. I measured mine and after 70K miles my rear rotors were still good so I just changed pads.

$500 for RSMs?
RSMs are < 2 hrs labour, $30 each. Thus ~$250.

$300 for an alignment?
Mother****. Most alignment shops charge half that.

Replace all hoses, **** that, replace them as they leak. Its just coolant, a leak is not going to do any damage.

The rest seems more fair, still on the high side, yet not as ridiculous. Replacing belts is a good idea at your mileage and age.
