my wife wants a new nap blanket (from brookstone. If you don't have one, get one). we got her sister a calendar, her mom a cheap pair of earrings. I owe her stepdad a crossbow bolt for the one I buried in a tree.

I just flat out ask what they want. As long as it is reasonably priced, that is what they get.

I really wish I could just get to the point of buying my wife and kids gifts and no one else. It is a ton of work, time, and money to buy gifts for a bunch of relatives who already have everything they want/need, merely to exchange for the sake of exchanging.

I do give gifts to a couple of family members who are borderline broke and they are very appreciative. Last year I bought my godson a remote control car and that was pretty much all he got because his family doesn't have any money at all. That took a pretty miserable Christmas for that entire family to one that was enjoyable because he was happy. I love being able to add legitimate joy and appreciation to peoples lives.

Buying an uncle who is worth 10's of millions a gift card to a restaurant or a couple of bottles of wine isn't the same. He has everything he wants and needs, but is appreciative nonetheless.

/rant

I suppose I should be happy that my family is loving and functional, though Christmas puts unnecessary stress on everything.

I never know. The problem is I hate buying "junk", and it's too expensive to buy every person something nice/quality. Also to know if they will like it or not.

There are plenty of high quality, heirloom type gifts less than $100.

Wallets, scotch/wine, nail polish/perfume--it reflects effort.

Perfume is risky business to give to someone. Alcohol is kind of risky too. Yes, what is this NAP blanket?

Don't think too much on whether they will like it or not. Buy them something and if they'll appreciate it they will try it out

also it's the busiest time for perfume stores

In my family we buy for the kids only. The adults get a card with the kids pictures.

If I spend $100 on Christmas gifts, I'm doing something completely different in my life.

Toys for the kids.
I dunno what the hell I'm going to do for the wife. Maybe buy her a house. Yea...I think that'll do the trick.

Sounds like my Christmas. Bought myself a Springfield XDM which might wife will give me, toys for the kids, and the wife wants to go on a shopping spree to decorate the house since we moved in March.
