Question for Frequent Travelers
So I was landing in Colombo Sri Lanka on a flight from Dubai last week when, during final descent, the flight attendant starts at the back of the plane and walks forward spaying an aerosol spray into the air as she is walking. Basically fumigates the entire flight from back to front. The announcement said it was to kill germs and that we should just cover our eyes and mouths.
I've flown a good deal around the world and have never seen this before. Apparently they do it on arrival to Australia as well. Has anybody seen this before? Know whats in the spray? I couldnt find much online about it... |

It was Sri Lankan airlines, but I think it has more to do w/ the nation that you are landing in more so than the carrier. |

Did that all this summer and they sprayed it. To be fair, i heard they were going to spray something and the lady didnt spray it by my seat but in seats behind me and in the cockpit galley (was in first, maybe they didnt want to "inconvenience" us)

Maybe this ties into the reason why so many Asian people wear surgical masks when they are out doing their day-to-day activities....?

Two reasons 1. In many parts of asia, air quality is terrible because the environmental regulations are not as strict as say the US 2. You wear one when you are sick or others are sick around you, to reduce germ contamination [bimmer app/galaxy s3]

"Exposure to these insecticide spray products has been associated with various adverse
health effects, including respiratory, dermal, and neurological symptoms." Sweet. I guess I never really thought about the pre/post flight spraying. It was just a little strange to get sprayed while the cabin was full. God knows what this really does to people's health... |

Has never happened to me, but I had sometimes wondered about insects inadvertently transported inside planes.
Casino, good link. Aquatic species transported inside the bilge and ballasts of big ships are a problem as they sometimes become invasive species. At first glance, maybe this is an attempt by some of these countries to prevent something similar from happening with insects and airplanes.

I see it fairly often here in the states, as well.....I suppose that is for the 2nd reason you gave, though.
