Exclamation Don't become a statistic!

Guya, my house was broken into last night. I had a security system about 15-20 years old, which still used standard phone lines. The burglars cut my phone line from my basment [ which does not have a padlock] smashed a window, and got into the house. guys, I kinda have a love for this community,so please take note, and don't make the same mistake that I did. Be proactive, and not reactive. get a newer system, and know how to use it. I know have a ADT system, and now the newer systems use a cellular [cellphone] signal. My phone line is repaired, and I'm back to normal, except for the door which is boarded up. I'm starting this thread because I feel like I should warn our community about this.

Security cameras and home insurance is for break in's when you're not home.
They want to get in... They are getting in. Best bet is to be able to identify them aferwards.

Now... You and your family might be home DURING a break in. You prepared for that?

That means you have to be up close and personal with them. What if they are bigger or move faster ? What if THEY have a gun ? Glad to see you are ok but your logic is flawed.

Tasers shoot, stun guns are the up close and personal ones. MACE gets kinda far, but I get your point. we have a crossbow in the house at all times, but the thing is, if its more than one guy, you're screwed. like one hit, rebolt and then hit. We normally have a rifle or two, but when my dad heads out in hunting season, he either takes one or both. But we are getting a second pistol in the house for the future.

I'm very sorry to hear this, as someone who travels on business frequently and has a family I worry. I figure a large dog is still the worlds best deterrent but we cannot have one at present, just not practical.

Can I ask what your neighborhood is like? For instance I live in a smaller town in a very densely populated area. Our neighborhood is extremely safe (heavily policed, always people around and houses are close) but we are near some neighborhoods with tougher makeup, very near several major freeways (fast in fast out) and people know there's stuff here worth stealing. My wife doesn't shoot nor do I and I feel a gun would be a bigger theft likelihood than ever coming in handy. We have an alarm but I'm the only one who ever remembers to use it and at that typically only when we all go away on a vacation because otherwise there is almost always somebody here...

What to do...

Better to have it and never need it than need it and never have it.

Arm up brother. No neighborhood on this planet is immune to crime

Lol. Yeah, none is immune but there's a big difference in crime between a 'hood and a neighborhood.

Let's compare the danger of crossing the street in front of an elementary school and running across a freeway. Sure, you could be struck and killed by a car in either situation, but the risk factor is much higher on the freeway.

IE: it is possible to greatly reduce your risk by picking a better location, whether it's a house or where you walk.

Total BS. My area is a crime free zone. I see signs saying so.

+1

Have a neighbor who was broken into during the night and shot the fvcker dead in the hallway. It sure is nice to live in a Stand Your Ground state.

EDIT: If your state is a Stand Your Ground state, if you shoot someone, make sure you kill them. If not, then they can come back and sue you.

Everyone here has been trying to say make sure you kill them, but no one wanted to say make sure you kill them haha I get what you mean. and thankfully I AM in a "Stand Your Ground" state. We're getting another gun to keep in the house in like a week.

What if the choices are 1) have it and have your child shot or 2) never need it, never have it.

I don't get it? Why would my kid get shot?

If you had the power to predict that in the future I would never need to defend myself or someone else from harm, I probably would still carry.

I'd still own them for fun and sporting and to represent the 2nd Amendment which's impact and importance goes far beyond the above reasons

Firearms that are properly stored, secured, carried and kids educated on safety prevent your #1

Buy a gun, learn to use it. And if you get a good safe your firearms aren't going anywhere.
