:: ECS Tuning :: BMW Upgraded M54 Aluminum Water Pump Pulley|Take one for a spin

We have a great looking, bolt-on solution for those wimpy plastic pulleys on your BMW water pump. Made of anodized aluminum, our black or silver water pump pulleys are way stronger than the originals, and will provide many miles of trouble-free performance.

Available in black or silver, these anodized aluminum pulleys bolt on fast, and are way tougher than the stock plastic originals they replace.

Squealing belt

UPDATE: The below was not the fault of the pulley. It was a failing mechanical tensioner (even though it was only a few months old.

I just purchased two of the silver ones and installed the first in my 2000 323i (5speed) yesterday.

Unfortunately, even though I replaced the belt, water pump, tensioner and all pulleys about 5 months ago, adding the ECS pulley makes the belt slip and squeal.

At first I thought maybe the tensioner is already failing, but putting the old plastic pulley back on completely solved it. While the belt was off I checked the alternator and it spins fine and doesn't have a lot of play.

So I hate to say this but I am sticking with the plastic pulley until this is solved.

I will try the second one on my daughter's 2001 330xi just to be sure... Will let you know if the same thing happens.

On the E46 this is a direct replacement pulley, they are the same size as the factory pulley. With that in mind that's a rather strange issue your running into. Please feel free to contact our customer service guys (phone 1.800.924.5172 or email customerservice@ECSTuning.com) in regards to your issue.

OK, update! I put the other one on my daughter's 2001 330xi and it did not squeal. So I ordered a hydraulic tensioner for my 323i and all is good now.

Apparently the aluminum pulley will show a marginal tension earlier than the plastic, so it actually helped me in this case.

I have used aftermarket water pump with metal impeller. After two and a half years the bearings failed and the pump started to stroke the engine. Here is what i filmed on this pump.
