Read the links in my signature.

Likely fuel pump. You can possibly add some fuel if the the gauge is at 1/4 tank or lower.

If the MAF sensor gets dirty or wet, it can cause the same code and conditions. Maybe try the easy route first and clean the MAF sensor first, then re-set the ses and try again.

No likely anything with the MAF, either problem with intake boots or fuel pump.

If the pump soft fails the car will run out of fuel with 1/4 tank of fuel still showing on the gauge.

Using the Hidden OBC Menu you will be able to determine if any fuel is still in the drivers side of the fuel tank. After about 1/2 tank or lower the drivers side of the fuel tank should be empty of very close to empty.

yes I don't think I hear the fuel pump, but do you you hear it normally when the car hasn't been off for a while?
thanks for the links. I'll check them out. car is at shop now. too bad for me it wasn't closer to home.
I have 3/4 tank so it looks like a hard failure.

Sounds like a fuel pump, if you have someone turn the car on, but not start it, you should hear the pump prime under the passenger side of the back seat. That's how I diagnosed it within a few minutes when it happened to me.

Fuel pump. Go to bmaparts.com and buy one, and replace.

Thanks for all of the input guys. In the end, it was just the fuel pump.
One nice thing about replacing it is that the slight hesitation around 3500rpm under hard acceleration seems to be gone. That may have been a sign that it was on its way out.

I'll also be doing my fuel filter soon, as the car has 162K km on it and it was last replaced at 100K km.
