1999 323i- questions about keyfobs

why is it every time i go to unlock the car i end up opening all the windows..? i know this is a feature but its a real pain in the ass when the car is covered in snow. also was wondering if the keyfobs changed throughout the years? i need to replace mine but it seems like its gonna be a bitch to get the new ones to recognize my car.

Pressing the button or turning the key in the lock?

If the unlock button is pressed twice on a working keyfob, the windows will open.

It sounds like yours is gunked up somehow.

You can replace the battery, you know, and while in there, might have a look around at stuff and maybe figure out that a simple cleaning might restore proper function to it. You're not pressing and holding it for a long time, are you?

Sounds like one press and it just cycles all the windows open? If not the keyfob, maybe it is some special coding you can get, but that sounds very unlikely as an option.

Try opening it up and seeing if you can see anything.

yes the Key style changed. later models have the "diamond" shaped key on the left while the earliest models have the "square top" key
.

I may be mistaken but here is the inside of a square key off the web to get an idea what's inside.

I had a similar problem after I set it to unlock all doors with one push of the button. If I pressed the unlock button twice all doors would unlock. But when I opened the drivers door, the window would go down. I set it back to unlock just the drivers door on the first push. It's cold and snowy here so I didn't look further into it.

i figured it out as far as unlocking the car from the drivers door- when you turn the key to the first "notch" it will unlock the door..if you continue to to turn the key all the way and hold it, it will open all the windows. as far as press the button on the remote goes- when you press and hold or press twice (the unlock button) it will open the windows.
